What did I do for my internship?
For my internship, I worked as a teaching assistant in the art classroom. I worked with the third period seventh grade art class. This year, I have spent a total of 75 hours helping in class. I have prepared materials, made copies, organized supplies, assisted students struggling in the class, even helped teach. This year, I worked with two separate classes of seventh graders. Both classes I have worked with were fairly large. Because middle schoolers do not choose their electives, I spent most of my time working with students who did not want to take the class and refused to participate. Though working with a large group of energetic seventh graders was challenging, it did afford me the chance to bond with them. I have become very attached to the seventh grade class and I hope that I have succeeded in supporting them in their artistic endeavors.
Why?
I chose this internship because I am interested in pursuing an art based education and career. For me, becoming an art teacher is a real possibility. I also enjoyed being able to give back to the ACLC community and assist one of my favorite teachers in the process of completing my internship. ACLC is all about learners taking leadership roles in the community, and I felt my time would be best spent interning for one of my favorite subjects. Even before becoming an intern, I spent an average of six hours in the art room each week. Art is one of my greatest loves in life, and I would be happiest spending my future doing it. Examples of my artwork can be found on the about Katie page.
